Low Back Pain Symptoms – Three Things You Should Know.

September 22nd, 2008 by Marc Warren | No Comments | Filed in back pain

When it comes to low back pain symptoms, it helps to know the causes. While the result may be the same in spite of of the cause, for some causes there are other options for lower back pain relief. Some are temporary while others offer more permanent relief.

The lower back has bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles and disks. Problems can arise with any of these things. Furthermore, in some people, no definite cause is ever found. In those cases, relief is independence from pain.

  • Strains

The most common reason for low back pain symptoms is damage caused by heavy lifting, a sudden movement that jerked the back a certain way or strained back muscles or ligaments. A muscle spasm in the lower back can also give one low back pain symptoms.

  • Structural Issues

There are some structural things that can cause low back pain symptoms. These include: sciatica, bulging or ruptured disks, osteoporosis and skeletal irregularities of the spine such as scoliosis, and arthritis.

Sciatica is caused by compression of a disk in the spine pressing on a main nerve  (sciatic nerve) that runs the length of the leg. It is felt as a sharp, shooting, pain, usually running through the buttock and down the leg. Sciatica can be felt as very severe back pain. Disks that are not functioning the way they should  can cause a lot of low back pain symptoms. Disks are supposed to be the cushions between the vertebrae. If the disk bulges or ruptures it can compress the nerve and be very painful.

Osteoporosis is a disease where the bones become brittle and porous. This can lead to an increased risk of fractures of the vertebrae, leading to severe pain in the lower back. If the spine curves in a different way, it can cause low back pain symptoms. One condition where the spine curves to the side is scoliosis. If the spine curves too much in any of its curves, it can cause back pain.

Arthritis in the spine can lead to many low back pain symptoms if the person suffers from spinal stenosis. This is caused by the arthritis narrowing the space for the spinal cord. Arthritis can also be in the hips, hands and knees. All of these conditions, once diagnosed, can be treated properly.

  • Serious

There are a few rare yet serious conditions that can lead to low back pain symptoms. If there is a tumor on the spine, it can press on the nerve and cause back pain. If there is an infection in the spine, one will have a fever and warmth in the area of the pain. Finally, there is a neurological problem that can affect the nerve roots for the legs and lower back. With this condition (cauda equine syndrome) there will be weakness in the legs, loss of bowel and/or bladder control, and numbness in the saddle or groin area.

Back pain affects more than 65 million Americans every year. Learn how to avoid being one of the statistics.

Back Pain that is Severe can be Caused by the Littlest Things

September 10th, 2008 by Marc Warren | No Comments | Filed in back pain

It’s true that car accidents, falls, and other serious injuries are likely to cause severe Back Pain .  Back muscles may be strong and sturdy but they’re not bulletproof as they say.  While they can withstand quite a bit of stress and injury, serious accidents can give a person constant pain in the upper or lower back, as well as the shoulders, neck, hips, and sides.  But it’s surprising how often even the smallest and simplest of things can cause severe back pain for days, weeks, months, and even years afterward.  What is also surprising is that people are often unaware of how they’ve injured or hurt their back even when it’s happened; they cannot connect what they’ve done to the severe back pain they’re feeling the next day or the next week.

For example, didn’t your mother always tell you to lift with your legs and not your back.  But people rarely think that this advice applies to them since they’re not lifting furniture or loading boxes in a truck, but just picking up heavy groceries or your golf clubs can cause severe back pain either right then or the next day.  Most people also overextend their back muscles even when sitting or standing - they rely on their backs to get them in and out of chairs when the legs muscles should be used.  Doing this time and again can actually cause severe Back Pain ; that’s right, just getting in and out of your chair, if done incorrectly, can hurt your back!

Improper footwear can also cause severe back pain.  Women who wear high heels are pushing their body forward and the back responds by pulling it upright.  Men can wear shoes that pinch which make the leg muscles work harder, which in turn causes severe back pain since the leg and back muscles are connected.Injury to your back can even occur when you don’t have proper shoes for walking or jogging.

As a matter of fact, sports like golf, racquetball, tennis, baseball, and many others can cause severe back pain.It is often the day after we play a really hard game or do some intense exercise that we then realize that we suddenly have some major back pain.  If you actively participate in sports this can be good as physical activity is very healthy and helps to keep your weight under control and improves blood and oxygen flow, but sometimes it’s easy to overdo it without realizing it.  Sports that have you hunched over such as golf or that involve sudden stops and starts such as tennis and racquetball can be very bad as stops and starts are jarring to the back, and staying hunched over means the back is working overtime.  These all cause severe back pain in even the easiest of games or competitions.

Some Easy Back Pain Treatment Ideas

September 8th, 2008 by Marc Warren | No Comments | Filed in back pain

Finding solutions to your chronic pain and stress in the back can seem like an impossible task for some, but it really doesn’t need to be.  There are some simple and easy Back Pain Remedies ideas you can try right at home that can really help to alleviate if not completely eliminate your back pain.Various back pain solutions help some people and don’t help others so lets take a look at a few suggestions.

First, try to lie on your back on a flat but soft surface such as your couch or mattress and put a pillow under your knees.  Some people mistakenly put the pillow under their feet or ankles as a back pain treatment but this usually just puts more pressure on the lower back and hip areas.  When you put support under your knees you’re keeping this curved part of your body supported and transferring some weight to the supportive pillows, taking pressure off your back.  If you stay still like this for some time you might notice that it’s an effective back pain treatment for most minor backaches.  Far too often we have too much weight and pressure on the lower back and staying in this position with support under the knees can help tremendously.

Another way for Back Pain Remedies , and this one you’ll never hear from your doctor, is to try rolling your back on a basketball!  The firmness of a basketball can work like a good massage, opening up and loosening up cramped and stiff muscles.  This can also help to encourage more blood flow in the small of the back, which too is part of any back pain treatment program.  Blood and oxygen are both healing agents and can encourage the back muscles to heal themselves.  While you may not have ever heard of a basketball as part of any back pain treatment, it can really help!Don’t push too hard on the ball, but just a little bit of pressure can help alot.

Never underestimate the power of heat when it comes to back pain treatment.  This might include a good heating pad when you’re reclining on the sofa or even when you’re at your desk in the office every day.  Cold weather makes muscles cramp up, so even just keeping a warm air vaporizer in your bedroom during winter months may help to alleviate some pain in the lower back and help you sleep better as well.  A hot shower or hot bath can also help, especially if you take your time to really soak those cramped and aching muscles.

None of these back pain treatment options we’ve outlined are difficult, but it’s surprising how often people ignore them, thinking that only a doctor or some harsh medication can provide permanent relief for them.  But if you try these, and especially if you do so on a regular basis, you might find some relief!

Easy Back Pain Remedies

September 7th, 2008 by Marc Warren | No Comments | Filed in back pain

Pills or easy treatment options are always are hope at a simple way of getting ride of our pains?  While there may be medications and topical solutions you can try for your pain, there are other homemade Back Pain Soloutions

Applying heat to sore muscles is a good part of any back pain remedies.Getting blood flow to the area of your body that you want can be helped with heat.Any injury or back pain needs good blood flow because blood flow helps with healing.  Many times a person will experience back pain because of small injuries and stresses that they’re not even aware of, such as when they suddenly jerk forward after hitting the brakes in the car of when twisting around suddenly.  Many don’t think of heating pads and hot showers as being Back Pain Tips

Other homemade back pain remedies may include simple stretching exercises to open up those muscles and get them loose.  While standing up and touching your toes can put too much pressure on the lower back, sitting up with your feet shoulder-width apart and leaning forward can do the trick.  Because you’re sitting the back is getting more support and is less likely to get stretched too far when doing this.  Manipulating the body to help those muscles heal and to get oxygen back into that area is part of many back pain remedies that doctors recommend.  Anyone with severe injuries or pain in any area is usually sent to physical therapy that often includes simple stretching exercises.  Non-impact aerobic exercise can also help since this encourages increased blood flow which also helps those muscles tremendously.  As with other back pain remedies, many people wouldn’t think of bike riding or of using an elliptical machine as being a healing for their back but it really can be!

Of course you can also take muscle relaxants and pain killers as part of back pain remedies but remember that this often doesn’t address the actual cause of your back pain.  If you have a very bad chair where you work or are overextending your back by playing too much golf or by lifting your children all day long, taking pills to make the pain go away won’t protect you from long-term injury caused by this type of misuse of the back.  Any effective back pain remedies should address the actual cause of the pain rather than just mask it with pain killers.
